symbolism and imagery of Rabia Balkhi


This line symbolizes the cultural values of men being valued more than women. Because men are seen to be more important in Afghan society, the Taliban who were in power during the time had forced women to only be allowed in specific hospitals and only be assisted by female doctors and/or nurses. The only hospitals that allowed these women were unsanitary and disturbing. Most had very little amount of supplies and no antibiotics for their patients. This line also shows imagery as it describes the environment of the hospital and how unsanitary and bad it is for all the women and children who are there.

  1. I agree with you, but I also think that imagery (and connotation) are literary devices that can be seen in this sentence. For me, I can almost see the people pushing and shoving with their bare feet stepping over each other. The word stank also helps to emphasize the situation.
